That thee Israeli government is by definition of being the Israeli government beyond reproach and is justified in any action to eliminate any threat, real or imagined from the Palestinians. Whew, sorry Melba, but you went and posted your age right there in public. I won’t be so rude as to announce it, other than to take note.
But seriously, folks:
It is not clear how many samples Ketchum tested, or where these samples came from, or how it would be known that the source was bigfoot/sasquatch, and not just some human being who might have left some blood on a barb wire fence or saliva on a discarded apple, or maybe my crazy uncle just spit in a jar and sent it in, with his usual wide eyed declaration of the truth of his latest tall tale. Given that the details are not well described, Over the Line, Smokey!, though not a genetics expert, feels pretty certain, regardless of what Ketchum wrote, that the 10 foot monster with glowing eyes is not of the same species as my mother. Or me. Or my son. And that those minor alterations in a few genes (we’ve all got those odds and ends hanging out) wouldn’t make my daughter’s feet grow to size 23. Besides, sounds like the alterations were all different. C’mon, Ketchum, I WAS born at night, but it wasn’t LAST NIGHT…..

Regular old human DNA means that whatever thing that DNA came from is part of our gene pool, freely interbreeding with the rest of us. I don’t know about you but for me, those “Bigfoot had my baby” or “I had Bigfoot’s baby” stories in the tabloids are strictly printed for The Stupids demographic.

Ketchum is a graduate of Texas A & M veterinary school. Apparently she is a veterinarian and she has been operating a DNA analysis laboratory at Timpson, Texas, for animal owners, breeders, and other clients, including forensic work and court testimony. According to Cryptomundo, she has a rating of F from the Better Business Bureau, based on a dozen or so complaints, documented at the BBB site.

Over the Line, Smokey! is gonna go out on a limb here, and suggest that Dr. Ketchum has gone off the rails here. Take that however you want. I see from one source who shall remain unnamed, that she has run over 200 samples, and not for free either; at $200 a pop, we’re talking lengthy European vacations for two. So maybe she isn’t off the rails (/winks). What I can say (besides “a fool and his money are soon parted”) is that a scientist copyrighting scientific articles before they are published is pretty much like farting in the general direction of the scientific process, not to mention the scientific community.

Sandusky attended a football camp for Polynesian players in Utah over the summer and urged all in attendance to play for Paterno.

Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News reports that grand jury is investigating Sandusky on allegations of indecent assault against a teenage boy. The Patriot-News reports that five people with knowledge of the case said the grand jury has been meeting for 18 months and has called witnesses, including Paterno and Curley. Penn State declines comment.

The Patriot-News broke the story that Jerry Sandusky was being investigated for child sex abuse back in March. We told the stories of two victims in detail.

We wrote additional stories in April and August, including one that reported the grand jury had heard testimony from multiple victims.

Any of the national news media who were shocked by Sandusky’s indictment last week evidently don’t read our newspaper or look at our website. They should have.

Update 11/11/2011:
Penn State University ignored the criminal investigation of Jerry Sandusky even after it was reported by a regional newspaper in March 2011; meanwhile Jerry Sandusky maintained his office on the Penn State University campus, and, (according to the newspaper that originally broke the story) lives next door to an elementary school!!!???!!!

Update: upon hearing that the board of trustees is meeting and considering prompt and decisive action, Mr. Paterno is trying to get out in front of this by announcing that he sympathizes with the victims, wishes he had done more, blah blah, and he wants to retire at the end of the season. Too little, too late. He thinks he is the boss; news flash, Mr. P: not any more. If he’s lucky he’ll be put on administrative leave on Friday.

A timeline…

[In the first place, dear reader, you must understand that Joe Paterno rules the football program at Penn State and is not in fact under the control of the athletic director or even the president. Rather, he tells THEM where to get off.]

Around 1967: Paterno hires Jerry Sandusky.
1977: Sandusky founds Second Mile, which provides him access to young boys who have little effective parental supervision. 

1994-1997 Sandusky allegedly abuses 3 boys, ( AKA Victims 4, 5, and 6) ages 7 or 8, 10, and 12 or 13, some at the Penn State football team hotel on the night before a home football game. 

1998: Sandusky, while naked, has contact with a naked 11 year old boy in the Penn State University football shower room. His mother complains to campus police. Another mother also makes a similar complaint. An investigation is made by the police and child protective services. He admits to having naked contact with at least one of the children. The authorities conclude that no sexual assault occurred. No chargesaree made. Sandusky promises someone (?) that he won’t do it again. Great. In November of 2011, Joe Paterno’s son will assert that Penn State University head football coach Joe Paterno knew nothing about this!! Really?

March 2002: a Penn State Football graduate assistant (who was a former Penn State University football player) heard “slapping” noises that he thought indicated sexual activity in the Penn State football shower room. Upon investigation saw the young boy facing the wall in the shower with his hands up on the wall, while Jerry Sandusky, a very large strong man, was perpetrating penile-anal “sex” on him. 

The graduate assistant went to his own father for advice. He then reported the incident to Penn State University head football coach Joe Paterno at the latter’s home. 

The next day Paterno met with Penn State University athletic director Curley and tells him, according to Curley, that the GA saw fondling or something of a sexual nature. The GA does not concur with Curley’s version.

10 days later(!) GA meets with Curley and Penn State University vice president Schultz. He says he told them he saw sex. They deny he said that. Curley states that he recalls having an “impression” of non-sexual fooling around. Schultz states he recalls possible grabbing of genitals while wrestling. Neither man denies that the account described contact in the shower between a naked middle-aged man and a naked 10 year-old child. Hello?

Penn State University President Spanier is informed of (some?) allegations. Spanier testified that he was told Sandusky had been seen “horsing around” with a boy, and presumably that both Sandusky and the child were both naked. Presumably, President Spanier realized that Sandusky was a middle-aged man and that the child was…well, a child.
Neither the police nor any child protection agencies are informed of the GA allegations. The identity and whereabouts of the child are unknown. 

Curley tells Second Mile that an internal investigation of allegations against Sandusky found “no wrongdoing.”

 Sandusky surrenders his key to the Penn State football locker room, is told not to bring children on to campus. He maintains his position as professor emeritus, with an office and phone, and all other university privileges.  He maintains his relationship as a volunteer coach at a local school, where he will allegedly engage in multiple sexual encounters with a child in the Second Mile program.

2007 Sandusky brings “victim 1″ of the indictment to Penn State football practice.
The mother of Victim 1 complains to high school about Sandusky, alleging multiple episodes of sexual misconduct; the police are notified. 

November 2008, after 31 years of access to unprotected boys, Sandusky is forbidden any contact with children in Second Mile. Sandusky maintains his position, office and privileges at Penn State University.

Unknown date: Sandusky forms for profit corporation which stages athletic programs and camps for children on various campuses of Penn State University.

October 2011: Sandusky maintains his position, office and privileges at Penn State University.

November 2011: On November 5, 2011 Sandusky was arrested and charged with seven counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse; eight counts of corruption of minors, eight counts of endangering the welfare of a child, seven counts of indecent assault and other offenses. Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and senior vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz (who oversaw the Penn State police department) were charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse by Sandusky. On November 6 Penn State University “bans” Sandusky from campus. President Spanier makes no statements regarding the victims or their families, but proclaims his “unconditional support” for Curley and Schwartz.

Paterno’s role in the cover-up of the 2002 incident has not been disclosed. He says he “did what he was supposed to do.” His son says he had no knowledge of the 1998 allegations. According to the attorney general’s office, he is not a target of the investigation. The president may be a different story however. And the Penn State University is certainly at risk as well, for violation of the federal Clery Act, not to mention civil actions.

1. The lodge at Gold Beach advised them not to try the trip because of the distance, the hour, and the fact that the lodge was hard to find. According to Kati, James insisted. Then they miss the turn by 16 miles. They still persist in their objective. We still do not know if the Kims had consumed alcohol before leaving Portland.

2. The previously reported stop at a convenience store in Merlin was not mentioned. Did this happen or not? apparently they did not get gas. Did James ask for directions there or anywhere? Kati must know the answer.

3. The story of their turn off Bear Camp Road onto the logging road is glossed over. Earlier accounts said they passed the turn, encountered rocks in the road, stopped, backed up, and turned onto the logging road. The 20/20 account makes it seem as though this sequence of events happened much later (long after they simply blindly turned onto the logging road), at the place where they stopped their vehicle. The original story suggests very poor judgment, the latter implies a recurring inattention to the road in a situation where they both knew it was possible to get lost.

4. The failure of the Josephine County SAR to investigate the early report of tracks on the logging road is glossed over to the point of misrepresentation; co-ordinator Ruprecht doesn’t appear in the 20/20 piece until James leaves the family, when she is reportedly told (erroneously) that she can stop searching. Further, the failure to mobilize “ground troops”, after the cell tower was identified, seems to have been a major shortcoming, as pointed out by the pilot who found Kati.
Rupeecht’s degree of responsibility for the death of James Kim is not addressed.
5. The 20 20 report makes it seem as though James Kims and later Kati left the car and wandered through the forest. This is not true; they walked along the road (James later wandered off the road). The Kims and their vehicle were not lost in a roadless wilderness. They were on a road.
6. The report that James was going to run a mile up the road confirms his deteriorated state of mind and his impending hypothermia. No mention was made of whether he carried matches, which were shown in an earlier segment. There can no longer be any real doubt that his decision to leave the road was irrational and related to his hypothermia and other stresses.

6. A minor point: Much was made of dehydration on the 20 20 report. They had fire and snow. They were starving, sleep deprived, frightened and hypothermic, but they should have had enough water.

I’m not sure why the internet pharmacies aren’t buying advertising on this site..you’d think that many of these folks must be off their meds.
Of course, many can’t spell or write a sentence, either.

The place to start is undoubtedly the evolution of the human foot and its functions. However, that is somewhat boring, so I choose to start today with a more interesting topic: “Doesn’t barefoot running hurt your feet?”

The answer is “YES, any kind of running can hurt your feet.” It is very important to realize that pain and injuries can result from barefoot running, but that is also true of any type of conditioning.

There are two general types of injuries that can result from barefoot running: trauma, and overuse.
Traumatic injuries include bumps, bruises, blisters, cuts, punctures, beestings, abrasions, and burns.
The frequency of these injuries is due in large part related to the failure to ease into barefoot running, find suitable running venues, toughen up the skin and tissues, and learn proper running technique.

The second category of injury can be called overuse, though misuse is also included. Barefoot running requires a different type of stride, landing, cadence and use of bone, muscle, tendons, ligaments and other body tissues. The development and adaptation of these body parts requires practice, good form, and at least three months of slowly building up the whole package. Attempting to progress faster than that can result in stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, or other unpleasant and nagging conditions.

I recently purchased The Complete Idiots Guide to Barefoot Running
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Idiots-Guide-Barefoot-Running/dp/1615640622 and have found it to be quite informative, though somewhat padded with generalities, prone to exaggeration of research studies, and embarassingly ignorant of some basic principles of physics. For the money, however, it is GOLD, particularly for its conservative schedule for getting into barefoot running.

According to the NCIS, each prisoner had fashioned a noose from torn sheets and T-shirts and tied it to the top of his cell’s eight-foot-high steel-mesh wall. Each prisoner was able somehow to bind his own hands, and, in at least one case, his own feet, then stuff more rags deep down into his own throat. We are then asked to believe that each prisoner, even as he was choking on those rags, climbed up on his washbasin, slipped his head through the noose, tightened it, and leapt from the washbasin to hang until he asphyxiated. The NCIS report also proposes that the three prisoners, who were held in non-adjoining cells, carried out each of these actions almost simultaneously.

It is probably worth pointing out that wishful thinking aside, if Coakley loses tomorrow, thirty million or more Americans will remain one slip on the ice and broken shoulder away from bankruptcy, with the alternatives being seeking more expensive and less thorough emergency room care with no follow-up rehab and costs passed on to all of us, or no treatment and debilitating injuries and pain in perpetuity.

You and I might think that is a big deal, but if you read enough left-wing blogs, it really is no big deal. If the bill fails, we can take Taibbi’s advice and just try again in 6-8 years. I mean really, the republicans aren’t much different from the Democrats, I’ve been told. Besides, won’t you feel better knowing that you didn’t sell out to immoral insurance agencies like Feingold and Sanders and the rest of the corporate whores?

A Sullivan classic

I know Andrew Sullivan is a controversial subject here, but I love it when he dials the gloom up to 11:

I can see no alternative scenario but a huge – staggeringly huge – victory for the FNC/RNC machine tomorrow. They crafted a strategy of total oppositionism to anything Obama proposed a year ago. Remember they gave him zero votes on even the stimulus in his first weeks. They saw health insurance reform as Obama’s Waterloo, and, thanks in part to the dithering Democrats, they beat him on that hill. They have successfully channeled all the rage at the massive debt and recession the president inherited on Obama after just one year. If they can do that already, against the massive evidence against them, they have the power to wield populism to destroy any attempt by government to address any actual problems.

This is a nihilist moment, built from a nihilist strategy in order to regain power … to do nothing but wage war against enemies at home and abroad.

What comes next will be a real test for Obama. I suspect serious health insurance reform is over for yet another generation.

I guess I can’t be so pessimistic, given the demographic trends that favor Democrats. I do think, though, that without non-white voters, we’d probably be a military dictatorship by now.
