Mitt Romney introduces new backward American flag at Comerica Park in Detroit.

The trees in Michigan are just right for Mitt Romney, but the American flag…. well, not so much.

Maybe the backward flag represents the Republican wish to go back in time to the ’50′s, before the pill, the internet, civil rights, gays coming out, Hawaiian statehood, and George W. Bush. Maybe Romney just wanted to fire something, and the American flag was close at hand.

Anyway, I’m in favor of it. I like a man with ideas.

  1. Am I missing a detail in the picture? The flag is displayed correctly per the guidelines of flag display.

When the flag is displayed in a manner other than by being flown from a staff, it should be displayed flat, whether indoors or out. When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left. When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way, that is with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.

  2. LOL, it’s right in front of you! The stars should be in the upper left hand corner in horizontal rows and the stripes should run horizontally across. You can’t make that flag look like that!!

If a flag is waving from a staff it has two visible sides. What we are looking at is the reverse side of the flag. When flat, our flag is supposed to be displayed as you describe it. This flag is not.

  3. upon review of the guidelines for displaying the flag, this appears to be an odd case. The flag is neither flying nor hung vertical nor lying flat. It is certainly closer to horizontal than vertical, in which case it shouldn’t be displayed as a vertical flag. Further, it may violate the usual guidelines for display, as it is used more as a festoon or draping over seats. :

When festoons, rosettes or drapings are desired, bunting of blue, white and red should be used, but never the flag.”

What it really is, is just a pseudopatriotic prop for a guy who is running for office by lying his ass off, who never served his country, and neither did his father or any of his many children.
