Why must we do a Discovery launch when there is still more we can do to protect the astronauts? Is this a cynical gamble with the lives of some of our finest people, to be accomplished over the Fourth of July weekend? Is this yet another pseudo-patriotic gesture, like the others we have seen in the past few days….flag burning prohibition, intimidation of the New York Times/national press? This disgusts me. I hope the astronauts survive, or better: that the launch will be cancelled because of weather. If this launch results in disaster, those responsible will have to be held to account. Regardless of the outcome, the cynical gamble is reprehensible.
